1 Week Old

 Abigail at 1 week old.

Abigail has fit in perfectly with our family and we have all loved having her home, including her big sister!  With Olivia being such a mommy's girl, I worried a little how she would handle mommy caring for a new baby and she has been fantastic and the biggest helper wanting to help with diaper changes, feeding, holding and even getting things for me when I need them.

When we left the hospital, Abigail's jaundice levels were a little high, not high enough for concern but high enough that the pediatrician wanted us to make a follow up appointment on Friday.  When we brought her in, they gave us her stats:

Length:  21 inches...92%
Weight:  8lbs, 8ounces...78%
Head: 35cm....53%

Her pediatrician looked at the weight numbers and asked if he was reading the 10 pounds and now 8 pounds, 8 ounces correctly.  He honestly didn't believe she was a 10 pound baby because for a baby to lose that much weight so quickly he said they would be in the hospital but other than her jaundice levels going up a little, everything about Abigail was great.  He feels since it was a scheduled c-section, some of the weight was water weight due to them filling me with fluids before the delivery and her not being able to squeeze the fluids out on the way out.  So, he wasn't too concerned with the weight loss, but definitely wanted to see it go up instead of down.  He went ahead and wanted us to do the Bili Bee treatment to lower the jaundice level and to go ahead and supplement an ounce after every feeding.  At the follow up appointment on Monday, Abigail's jaundice levels were way down and her weight was up to 8 pounds, 15 ounces so it was a great appointment!

Other than trips to the pediatrician, feeding around the clock (and sleepless nights), the first week was spent doing a lot of this...

A lot of Olivia being her crazy self...

A lot of afternoon walks...

And bike rides for Olivia...

I can't believe how quickly Olivia has outgrown her tricycle!

Lots of this...

Olivia even helped give Abigail her first bath...

And since we started supplementing (an ounce of pumped milk or formula if I can't pump enough), Olivia was excited to get to help feed Abigail.  Her words: "mommy, take a picture of me feeding Abigail for the first time."  Good thing my phone was near!

It has been interesting explaining to Olivia why only mommy can feed Abigail and she doesn't understand why she can't pump milk also for her.  She has asked to many times!  I wonder what kind of conversations she is having about this at school...

But the best part about this week has been watching Olivia and Abigail bond :)

It is crazy that just a week ago I would lay in the bed with Olivia as I put her to sleep and think how tiny her hands and feet were and now after having another baby in the house, her hands and feet seem so big to me.  Everything about her seems so much older than it was before.  It is still hard to believe Olivia is now the big sister and Abigail is the baby sister.
